The disease is caused by the fungus Gliocephalotrichum simplex, which acts as a significant pathogen affecting various botanical species. It is primarily recognized as a post-harvest decay agent, though it can also manifest in field conditions, particularly in warm and humid environments. The infection type is generally categorized as a necrotic soft or dry rot.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include several tropical crops, most notably cacao. The fungus attacks the tissues of the fruits, utilizing enzymatic degradation to breach the skin and colonize the internal pulp. This process results in significant economic losses for farmers, as the damaged produce is rendered unsuitable for processing and market distribution.

Visible symptoms of Gliocephalotrichum simplex infection include sunken, discolored lesions that appear on the fruit's surface. As the disease advances, these lesions soften and become covered in a visible mat of fungal mycelium and spores, typically appearing whitish to cream in color. In advanced stages, the internal tissue becomes completely macerated.

The proliferation of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with high humidity and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C serving as optimal triggers. Spores are easily disseminated through wind, rain splashes, and contact with contaminated tools or storage crates. The presence of surface wounds, often caused by insects or harvesting tools, is a prerequisite for rapid infection.

Key prevention methods involve meticulous sanitation of the orchard, protecting fruits from insect damage, and ensuring rapid drying of harvested materials.
