Description
Gloeodinium is a genus of freshwater dinoflagellate algae that, under specific agrotechnical conditions, can act as a pathogenic organism affecting aquatic and semi-aquatic crops, as well as decorative plants in hydroponic systems. Unlike typical fungal pathogens, this organism belongs to the phytoplankton group capable of photosynthesis, but excessive proliferation causes growth suppression and tissue damage in host plants.
The type of damage is associated with the disruption of gas exchange and plant nutrition. Gloeodinium forms dense, mucilaginous colonies or films on the surface of substrates, roots, or leaves in contact with water. This results in the blockage of stomata and creates an unfavorable microenvironment that promotes the development of secondary bacterial rots and fungal infections, which cause the primary harm to the affected crop.
Crops most susceptible to this infestation include rice, aquatic ornamental plants, and various vegetable crops grown using flowing hydroponic systems. The development of this organism poses a particular threat in greenhouse facilities, where high humidity and the presence of nutrient solutions in the water provide an ideal environment for its active vegetative reproduction.
Conditions favorable for development include high light intensity, the presence of excess mineral fertilizers in the water (especially nitrogen and phosphorus), and stagnant water in circulation systems. A temperature range of 20–28 degrees Celsius is optimal for the rapid growth of Gloeodinium colonies, which often coincides with the peak growth stages of many agricultural plants.
Protection measures involve a comprehensive approach aimed at limiting nutrient overload and improving water aeration. Recommended practices include:
- Regular replacement of nutrient solutions in hydroponics.
- Application of algicides approved for use in aquaculture.
- Monitoring pH levels and timely cleaning of water supply systems.
- Shading open water reservoirs or nutrient tanks to prevent algal photosynthetic activity.
