Gloeodinium montanum is a unique biological agent that acts as a pathogen or harmful epiphyte on various plant species. Although it is a dinoflagellate alga by classification, it can colonize the foliage and stems of plants, particularly in high-humidity greenhouse environments, leading to significant physiological stress for the host plants.

The agent operates by forming dense, slimy biofilms on the surface of plant organs. This layer inhibits gas exchange and reduces the amount of light reaching the leaf tissue, which directly disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Unlike typical fungal pathogens, it thrives on environmental surface conditions rather than penetrating deep into the internal tissues.

Plants at risk include greenhouse vegetables, ornamentals, and hydroponically grown seedlings. Key symptoms include the presence of brownish or greenish viscous films on leaves and stems. As the colony grows, the affected areas show yellowing (chlorosis), wilting, and in advanced stages, tissue death due to the lack of access to atmospheric gases and light.

The development of Gloeodinium montanum is driven by environmental factors. High air humidity, poor airflow, and the presence of standing water on plant surfaces are the primary drivers. Furthermore, high concentrations of nutrients in irrigation water can provide the necessary energy source for the algae to multiply rapidly across the crop canopy.

Control and prevention strategies focus on modifying the microclimate. Reducing relative humidity through active ventilation and ensuring proper spacing between plants are essential. Copper-based fungicides are often used to manage algal outbreaks effectively. Regular disinfection of greenhouse structures and irrigation systems is also recommended to eliminate resting stages of the organism.
