Gloeophyllum is a genus of wood-decaying fungi belonging to the Agaricomycetes class, known as significant biodeterioration agents. The pathogen acts by penetrating the wood structure and initiating the breakdown of cellulose. This fungus is a primary cause of brown cubical rot, which leads to the rapid loss of structural integrity in timber and wooden materials.
The primary hosts for this fungus include both softwood and hardwood species exposed to outdoor environments or damp, poorly ventilated areas. Gloeophyllum is frequently observed on structural timbers, wooden bridges, utility poles, railway sleepers, and exterior cladding that is regularly exposed to moisture and rain.

Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and germinate in surface checks or cracks, where they establish a mycelial network that degrades the cellular structure of the wood.
