Gloeophyllum odoratum is a species of wood-decay fungus that belongs to the order Gloeophyllales. It is well-known for causing intense brown rot, which compromises the structural integrity of timber and living trees alike by breaking down cellulose components within the wood cells.

The host range of this fungus primarily includes coniferous tree species such as spruce, pine, and fir. In forestry settings, it colonizes dead wood, fallen logs, and stumps. In structural timber, it frequently attacks untreated wood used in damp, poorly ventilated conditions, such as railway sleepers or supporting beams.

Symptoms of an infection include the presence of perennial or annual sporocarps, which are corky or leathery brackets with a rusty-brown hue. Infected wood undergoes significant changes: it darkens, loses its mechanical strength, becomes brittle, and develops deep cracks. A distinct, pleasant anise-like odor is often detectable, especially when the fruit bodies are fresh.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and moderate temperatures are crucial for the spread and germination of its spores. The fungus thrives in stagnant air environments where moisture levels are maintained, allowing the mycelium to penetrate deep into the wood fibers and consume the cellulose structures over time.

Control and prevention strategies focus on moisture management and chemical preservation. Ensuring adequate ventilation in building structures and keeping timber dry significantly inhibits fungal growth. For agricultural and forestry applications, treating lumber with specialized wood preservatives and performing regular sanitary inspections are the primary defense measures against this pathogen.
