Gloeophyllum sepiarum, commonly known as the rusty gilled polypore, is a wood-decaying basidiomycete fungus. It is a major pathogen responsible for causing brown rot in coniferous timber, particularly in structural wood elements exposed to outdoor conditions, such as fences, utility poles, and roofing.
This pathogen specifically attacks coniferous species, including spruce, pine, and fir. While it prefers softwood, it can also infect hardwood under specific conditions where high moisture levels and oxygen availability allow for optimal colonization of the wood substrate.
The primary symptom of an active infection is the presence of hard, leathery, shelf-like fruiting bodies that exhibit a rust-brown color with concentric zones. As the fungus consumes cellulose within the wood, the internal structure breaks down, turning the wood brittle and dark brown. Eventually, the timber cracks into small, distinct cubes, rendering it structurally useless.
The development of Gloeophyllum sepiarum is facilitated by environmental factors such as high wood moisture content and consistent exposure to air. This fungus is remarkably resilient; it can tolerate dry periods and resume growth immediately upon rehydration. Its spores are spread primarily by wind, making exposed timber structures highly vulnerable to infestation.
