Gloeoporus (Latin: Gloeoporus) is a genus of fungi within the Meruliaceae family, recognized for causing wood decay. In agronomic and forestry practices, these fungi are identified as pathogens or decomposers that colonize living, stressed, or dead woody tissues, significantly compromising the structural integrity of trees.
The causative agent propagates through spores that enter tree systems via bark lesions, pruning wounds, or frost cracks. The infection is characterized as wood rot, specifically targeting the xylem, where the fungal mycelium decomposes cellulose and lignin, leading to severe decay and weakening of the trunk or branches.
Common hosts for Gloeoporus include various fruit-bearing species such as apple and pear trees, as well as deciduous forest trees. The disease thrives in moist environments, particularly where trees are already weakened by environmental stress, pest infestations, or poor maintenance, providing the fungus with an entry point to colonize the host.
Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of distinct fungal fruiting bodies on the bark, which are often leathery or fleshy with a porous undersurface.
