Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Gloeosporium citri, which is recognized as a significant pathogen causing anthracnose-like symptoms in citrus species. This fungus infects various parts of the plant, including leaves, branches, and fruits, leading to premature leaf drop and the deterioration of fruit quality.
Common hosts include lemon, orange, grapefruit, and various lime varieties. The pathogen typically establishes itself on trees that are stressed, weakened by nutritional deficiencies, or grown under improper environmental conditions that hinder the plant's natural immune system.
Symptoms initially appear as small, brownish spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and become necrotic. Dark fruiting bodies, known as acervuli, often become visible as black specks on the surface of these lesions. On mature fruits, the infection manifests as sunken, circular spots that eventually turn into rot, rendering the harvest unmarketable.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures that support fungal growth. Spores are disseminated by water splashes during rainfall or irrigation, as well as by wind or contaminated pruning tools, which can facilitate long-distance spread within an orchard.
Effective management strategies rely on cultural practices and chemical control. Key preventative steps involve pruning out and destroying diseased tissues, maintaining adequate ventilation within the canopy to prevent moisture buildup, and avoiding overhead irrigation. The application of protective copper-based fungicides is essential to manage severe outbreaks and prevent the infection from spreading to healthy tissues.
