Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Gloeosporium theae-sinensis, a pathogen responsible for specific leaf spots and blight conditions in tea plants. This fungus acts as a significant threat to tea cultivation, causing necrosis of tissues and impairing the physiological functions of the leaves.
The primary host for this pathogen is the tea plant Camellia sinensis. The fungus affects the leaves, leading to severe defoliation. It is particularly dangerous in humid tea-growing regions where the environmental conditions provide constant support for the pathogen's life cycle throughout the year.
Symptoms of the infection include brown or dark-colored spots on the leaves, which often expand and coalesce. The presence of tiny black acervuli or pycnidia, appearing as small dots within the lesions, is a characteristic diagnostic feature of Gloeosporium theae-sinensis. As the disease progresses, the infected leaf tissue dries out and becomes brittle.
The development and dissemination of the disease are heavily favored by high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily dispersed via splashing rain, wind currents, and mechanical contact during agricultural operations. Dense planting and poor sanitation within the fields exacerbate the spread of the fungus.
Economic damage caused by this blight includes reduced leaf yield and diminished quality of the finished tea product. Preventive measures should focus on maintaining adequate field sanitation, improving air circulation through proper pruning, and utilizing registered fungicides during periods conducive to high disease pressure. Regular monitoring is essential to prevent outbreaks.
