Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Gloeosporium thuemenii, which primarily affects various species of grapevines. This pathogen is a significant concern in viticulture, as it disrupts the physiological processes of the vine and impacts the quality of the harvested produce.
Gloeosporium thuemenii manifests its presence primarily on the green parts of the grapevine, including leaves, young shoots, and developing berries. While primarily a grape pathogen, it can also affect related species if environmental conditions favor the spread of fungal spores.
Symptoms are identified by the appearance of small, circular, dark-colored spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, causing necrotic tissue death. On the shoots, the infection forms deep ulcers that can girdle the stem, while the berries show sunken, dark lesions that lead to shriveling and decay.
The life cycle of the pathogen is heavily influenced by high humidity and consistent rainfall, which facilitate spore dispersal. The fungus overwinters in infected canes and leaf debris, making sanitation practices vital for breaking the disease cycle before the arrival of the spring growing season.
