Gloiothele is a genus of fungi within the family Pterulaceae, known for its role in wood decay processes. While often acting as saprotrophs in nature, certain species under this genus can cause significant pathological issues in woody plants, leading to internal wood rot.

The primary disease type associated with this fungus is white rot. The pathogen degrades the wood structure, specifically targeting lignin and cellulose, which eventually leaves the interior of the tree hollow, fibrous, and structurally unstable.

Host plants typically include various broad-leaved trees. The infection usually occurs through entry points such as pruning wounds, broken branches, or frost cracks, allowing the fungal mycelium to colonize the xylem of the plant.

Key symptoms include the emergence of fungal fruit bodies on the bark surface. These bodies are often resupinate or crust-like. As the infection progresses, the wood loses its mechanical integrity, which can be identified by a lighter color and a distinctively soft or mushy texture upon inspection.

Prevention and management require a proactive approach to tree maintenance. This includes avoiding unnecessary physical damage to the bark, immediate treatment of pruning cuts, and the removal of deadwood or infected tree parts to reduce the spore load in the immediate environment. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation is also essential for natural resistance.
