It is scientifically important to clarify that Glomeraceae are not plant pathogens. They are a family of fungi within the phylum Glomeromycota that act as vital mutualistic symbionts. They are famous for forming arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), which are essential for the growth and survival of the vast majority of vascular plants on Earth.

The symbiotic relationship functions through a specialized exchange: the fungus colonizes the root cortex and forms arbuscules—tree-like structures where nutrient transfer occurs. The fungus provides the plant with essential nutrients, particularly phosphorus and microelements, while the plant provides the fungus with sugars derived from photosynthesis.

A wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, legumes, and various fruit trees, host Glomeraceae. These fungi are particularly valuable in low-input agricultural systems, where they effectively extend the reach of the root system to explore the soil profile for water and nutrients that the roots cannot access alone.

The development of these fungi depends on specific environmental conditions. They thrive in well-aerated soils with moderate nutrient availability. Intensive tillage, high levels of chemical fertilizers (especially soluble phosphorus), and systemic fungicides can significantly hinder the formation and function of the mycorrhizal network.

In modern agronomy, Glomeraceae are used as bio-fertilizers and bio-inoculants. Incorporating these fungi into the soil improves overall plant vitality, enhances drought tolerance, and helps maintain long-term soil health.
