Glomerales (order of Glomeromycota) are not plant diseases but essential soil fungi that form arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbioses with plant roots. These fungi are obligate biotrophs, meaning they rely entirely on the host plant for carbon sources while providing the plant with crucial mineral nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and various micronutrients.

The biological mechanism involves the penetration of the root cortex, where the fungus develops structures known as arbuscules. These tree-like structures serve as the interface for nutrient exchange, allowing the host plant to increase its root surface area significantly beyond the reach of the root hairs, which is vital for nutrient uptake in poor soils.

Nearly all major agricultural crops, including wheat, corn, legumes, and most fruit trees, associate with these fungi. Environmental conditions significantly impact the proliferation of Glomerales. Intensive agricultural practices, such as heavy tillage, excessive application of synthetic phosphorus fertilizers, and the routine use of certain fungicides, can severely disrupt the mycorrhizal network and reduce the symbiotic efficiency of the host plants.

In modern agronomy, maintaining soil health to support Glomerales populations is considered a best practice for sustainable yield maximization. Farmers often use integrated approaches, such as cover cropping and reduced tillage, to foster these beneficial interactions, ultimately leading to improved plant vigor, better soil structure, and lower requirements for chemical inputs.
