The Glomerellaceae family represents a significant group of fungal pathogens that cause substantial damage to global agricultural production. These fungi are primary agents of diseases commonly referred to as anthracnose and bitter rot. They possess complex life cycles allowing them to survive under diverse environmental conditions, making them persistent threats to both horticultural and field crops.

A wide variety of crops are susceptible to these pathogens, including orchard fruits like apples and pears, berry crops, and various vegetable species such as tomatoes and cucumbers. The range of host plants is expanding, complicating crop protection efforts. Symptoms of Glomerellaceae infection are highly distinct, often manifesting as sunken lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit. Under humid conditions, these structures may release masses of conidia, creating a pinkish or orangey mucilaginous slime on the surface of the affected plant tissue.

Spore dispersal is facilitated by rain splashes, wind currents, and mechanical activities. The pathogens can remain dormant in infected soil, crop debris, or perennial woody parts of plants, providing a continuous source of inoculum that can infect new plant growth as soon as climatic conditions become favorable.
