Description
It is scientifically inaccurate to categorize Glomeromycota as a plant disease. These organisms are specialized fungi that form a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship known as arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) with the roots of the vast majority of terrestrial plant species.
These fungi do not act as pathogens; rather, they are endosymbionts. The fungus colonizes the root cortex and forms arbuscules, which serve as the primary interface for nutrient exchange between the fungal partner and the host plant, effectively extending the root system.
Plants colonized by Glomeromycota typically exhibit no signs of infection. Instead, they show signs of improved health, such as enhanced uptake of phosphorus and water, increased tolerance to abiotic stressors like soil salinity or drought, and improved overall growth rates.
The development of these fungi requires living plant roots, adequate soil oxygen, and moderate moisture levels. They are highly sensitive to excessive mineral fertilization, especially phosphorus, and intensive soil tillage, which can disrupt the delicate hyphal networks in the rhizosphere.
Management practices should focus on conservation rather than elimination. Farmers promote these beneficial organisms by practicing reduced tillage, integrating cover crops into rotations to provide continuous host availability, and utilizing integrated pest management to avoid harmful chemical residues.
