The order Gloniales includes a group of ascomycetous fungi that often act as pathogens or saprotrophs on woody plants. These fungi are significant in both forestry and horticulture as they primarily target the bark and thin branches, leading to the development of necrotic lesions that impair the plant's vascular health.

The disease is caused by fungi within the class Dothideomycetes. It is classified as a bark necrosis or canker-type disease, where the fungus invades the periderm and cambium layers. This invasion leads to the destruction of transport tissues, causing localized tissue death and interrupting the flow of nutrients throughout the plant.

Common hosts for these fungi include a wide range of deciduous trees and shrubs. In garden and nursery settings, the disease is frequently observed on plants that have been weakened by environmental stressors such as drought, winter frost, or improper soil moisture management, making them susceptible to fungal colonization.

Key symptoms and diagnostic signs include:

  • The emergence of elongated, black, fruit-body structures on the bark surface.
  • Cracking and peeling of the outer bark, revealing necrotic tissue underneath.
  • Gradual dieback of twigs or branches, beginning from the tips or at specific infection points.
  • Discoloration of the inner bark and cambium, which becomes darker than healthy tissue.

The development and spread of Gloniales are heavily influenced by climate factors, specifically moisture levels. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air promote the production and dispersal of fungal spores. Mechanical injuries, such as sunscald or storm damage, provide essential entry points for the pathogen to establish itself.

The harmfulness of this disease manifests in the gradual physiological decline of the host plant. It reduces growth rates, diminishes ornamental value, and in severe cases, predisposes the tree to further secondary infestations by wood-boring insects. Persistent infection can eventually result in the systemic death of the entire plant.

Management and prevention strategies focus on sanitation and tree vigor. Pruning and removing infected branches is the primary step to reduce the local inoculum load. Maintaining plant health through proper fertilization and watering helps build natural defenses. Applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season is a recommended practice to minimize spore survival.
