Gloniella typhae is a species of fungus in the order Hysteriales that acts as a pathogen or saprotroph on plants of the Typha genus (cattails). It is specifically adapted to infect the leaves and stems of these plants, often found in wetlands, ponds, and marshy habitats where cattails grow in dense stands.

The biology of this fungus is defined by the development of hysterothecia, which appear as elongated, black, narrow structures on the surface of the host tissue. These reproductive structures break through the plant epidermis, allowing spores to be released. The mycelial network colonizes the plant's vascular tissues, gradually weakening the structural integrity of the leaves.

The visible symptoms of infection include dark, necrotic streaks or lesions that run parallel to the venation of the leaves. Over time, these spots coalesce, leading to chlorosis, browning, and premature dieback of the foliage. In severe cases, the infected stems become brittle and may snap under environmental pressure.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Gloniella typhae include high humidity, stagnant air, and cool to moderate temperatures. The fungus relies on moisture for spore dispersal and germination. Consequently, the disease is more prevalent in late spring or autumn when atmospheric humidity is consistently high and foliage remains wet for extended periods.

Management and prevention strategies focus on improving environmental conditions and sanitation. Removing dead organic matter during the dormant season significantly reduces the primary inoculum source for the following year. Ensuring adequate space between plants to promote better airflow can also inhibit the spread of the pathogen in managed landscapes or decorative wetlands.
