Glonium is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Dothideomycetes, typically found colonizing the bark and wood of various woody plants. These fungi often act as saprotrophs or opportunistic pathogens, establishing themselves on damaged or weakened tissue, which can eventually compromise the overall vitality of the host tree.

The disease primarily affects deciduous trees and shrubs, although its presence is often most noticeable on dying branches. While they may start as secondary colonizers on necrotic tissue, their ability to expand into living bark makes them a concern for foresters and orchard owners aiming to maintain long-term plant health.

The primary clinical signs include the emergence of small, black, elongated, or linear fruiting bodies (ascomata) on the bark surface. These structures may appear in clusters, giving the affected bark a rough or fissured appearance. As the infection progresses, the wood beneath the bark may show signs of decay, discoloration, and structural softening.

Favorable conditions for the development of Glonium include extended periods of high humidity and rainfall, which facilitate spore dispersal and germination. Mechanical injuries, winter sunscald, or improper pruning practices create essential entry points for the fungal spores, allowing them to penetrate deep into the outer protective layers of the wood.

Management of this condition focuses on preventative cultural practices rather than direct chemical control. Key strategies include sanitizing infected wood through pruning, ensuring that all garden tools are sterilized to prevent cross-contamination, and focusing on tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to help the host defend itself against infection.
