Glyphium is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Dothideomycetes. In agricultural science, it is recognized as a fungal pathogen that primarily affects woody plants and shrubs. While often appearing as a saprophyte, it can behave as a weak parasite, colonizing stressed or weakened tissues of a host plant, eventually leading to structural damage.

The host range of Glyphium typically includes deciduous trees and ornamental shrubs. Species such as Glyphium elatum are commonly found on the bark of twigs and branches. Plants undergoing environmental stress, lack of nutrients, or physical injury are significantly more susceptible to establishing a severe infection.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of narrow, elongated, slit-like fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark. These structures, known as hysterothecia, turn black and become clearly visible as the disease progresses. Infected bark often cracks and loses its structural integrity, which weakens the affected branches and stunts the overall growth of the host.

The development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on moisture levels and temperature conditions. Spores are released during periods of high humidity and moderate rainfall, being dispersed efficiently by wind and splashing water. These environmental conditions are critical for the fungus to germinate and successfully penetrate the bark layers.

The economic impact of Glyphium is observed in the decline of plant vitality and the loss of aesthetic value in nursery stocks. Protecting crops involves a combination of preventive and curative practices:

  • Removing and destroying infected branches through sanitary pruning.
  • Sterilizing pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Managing irrigation to avoid prolonged leaf and bark wetness.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides if the disease pressure is high.
