Description

Gnomonia leaf spot, caused by the fungus Gnomonia nerviseda, is a common and destructive foliage disease affecting walnut trees. As an ascomycete fungus, it primarily targets the leaves, severely impacting the tree's photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor. This disease is particularly prevalent in orchard environments characterized by high humidity and frequent rainfall.

The primary host for this pathogen is the English or Persian walnut (Juglans regia). While the disease is largely limited to the leaves, it can occasionally affect petioles and tender green shoots under favorable conditions. Young trees are especially susceptible to early defoliation, which can stunt their growth and significantly decrease their long-term health.

The initial symptoms are characterized by small, brown or reddish-brown circular to angular spots that typically emerge along the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to large necrotic areas that eventually cause the entire leaf to wither. Close inspection of the underside of the leaves reveals small black fruiting bodies, known as perithecia.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spores are disseminated by rain splash and wind, and they require a film of moisture on the leaf surface to germinate and penetrate plant tissue. The fungus survives the dormant winter season within infected leaf litter on the ground, releasing spores the following spring.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to premature leaf drop, resulting in reduced nut quality and lower overall yields. In severe cases, repeated annual infections can weaken the entire tree, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and other secondary pathogens. Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Strict sanitation by removing and destroying all fallen leaves.
  • Pruning trees to improve aeration and light penetration within the canopy.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides during the early spring bud-break.
  • Monitoring orchards and applying appropriate systemic fungicides if symptoms appear.
