Gnomoniella is a type of fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division, responsible for causing various necrotic leaf spot and twig blight diseases in a wide range of woody plants. The pathogen survives the winter in the form of perithecia on fallen leaves or infected twigs, which release ascospores during the following spring, initiating new infection cycles.

This disease primarily targets various deciduous species, including orchard fruits like apples and pears, as well as several ornamental and forest trees. The infection often remains localized initially, but as the mycelium colonizes the host tissue, the damage can spread rapidly, particularly in orchards where tree health is compromised by stress or improper maintenance.

The visual symptoms of a Gnomoniella infection typically manifest as necrotic lesions on leaves, which may appear as irregular brown or black spots. These spots may eventually merge, leading to tissue death and premature leaf drop.
