Gnomoniella leaf spot of alder is a common fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Gnomoniella tubiformis. This pathogen predominantly affects various species of the Alnus genus, such as black alder and grey alder. The disease manifests as necrotic lesions on the foliage, impacting the tree's overall health and aesthetic value in both forest ecosystems and urban landscapes.

The causal agent, Gnomoniella tubiformis, is a parasitic fungus that completes its life cycle primarily on host leaves. During the autumn and winter months, the fungus survives as perithecia within the leaf litter. When spring arrives, spores are released during rainfall events, which then infect newly developing leaves, starting the annual cycle of the disease once again.

Clinical signs of the infection typically appear in mid-summer. Initially, small, chlorotic spots form on the leaf surface, which gradually expand into irregular necrotic patches. These lesions may coalesce, eventually covering a significant portion of the leaf blade. Persistent, heavy infections cause significant stress to the host tree, leading to reduced annual growth increments and general physiological decline. Managing this disease effectively requires a combination of sanitation and preventative measures:

  • Removing and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate the primary inoculum source for the next season.
  • Promoting airflow through the canopy by thinning and pruning dense tree stands.
  • Applying preventive fungicide treatments if local conditions favor an outbreak.
  • Improving overall soil quality and tree vigor to boost natural defenses against pathogens.
