Gnomoniopsis is a genus of fungi that includes significant plant pathogens, most notably Gnomoniopsis castaneae, which is responsible for causing kernel rot in chestnut trees. This disease represents a major challenge for commercial nut production, affecting both the general health of the tree and the quality of the harvest. It is a systemic fungal infection that requires careful management to prevent widespread outbreaks.
The causal agent is an ascomycete fungus that propagates through the dispersal of conidia and ascospores. The pathogen enters the host through wounds or natural openings, colonizing the tissues. It is characterized by a latent phase, meaning the fungus can exist within the plant host for extended periods without showing visible symptoms until environmental or physiological triggers activate its rapid growth.
Typical symptoms involve necrotic lesions on foliage and shoots, as well as the progressive decay of the kernel. When an infected nut is split, a whitish or yellowish fungal mass is often visible inside, replacing the healthy tissue. As the disease progresses, the nuts become discolored, light in weight, and eventually shrivel, leading to premature drop and significant loss of edible product.
