Description
Gnomoniopsis fructicola is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing fruit blight and significant decay in various crops. As a member of the Ascomycota phylum, this fungus is known for its ability to compromise the structural integrity and quality of berries, particularly in temperate climates.
The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated strawberry. The infection can target all reproductive stages of the plant, starting from blossoms and moving to developing fruit, leading to substantial yield losses that can reach critical levels if management is neglected.
The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of dark, sunken lesions on the fruit surface. As the disease progresses, these lesions enlarge, often becoming covered with masses of fungal spores that appear as whitish or cream-colored pustules, eventually leading to the mummification of the berry.
The proliferation of Gnomoniopsis fructicola is heavily dependent on moisture and humidity. Frequent rainfall and poor airflow within the crop canopy create an ideal environment for spore germination and rapid spread throughout the field, utilizing plant debris as a reservoir for survival between seasons.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach including:
- strict sanitation measures to remove and destroy infected plant parts;
- optimizing planting density to ensure proper air circulation;
- mulching to minimize direct contact between developing fruit and soil pathogens;
