Description

Godronia canker is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Godronia ribis. It primarily affects the stems and bark of currant and gooseberry bushes, manifesting as a severe necrotic condition that leads to the decline and eventual death of infected branches.

The fungus targets various species of the Ribes genus. It typically gains entry into the plant through wounds caused by pruning, insects, or winter damage, establishing its mycelium within the vascular tissues and bark, which compromises the nutrient transport within the bush.

Visible symptoms include elongated, depressed, and discolored lesions on the stems. As the infection progresses, the bark in the affected areas becomes brittle and may show deep cracking. During wet conditions, small, yellowish or brown apothecia (fruiting bodies) emerge through the epidermis of the infected bark, signifying active sporulation.

The disease thrives in environments characterized by high humidity and cool to moderate temperatures. Spore dispersal is facilitated by splashing rain and moisture, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across dense plantings. The pathogen survives the winter in the mycelial form within infected stems or debris on the ground, serving as a primary inoculum source.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach to reduce the pathogen population. Essential practices include the rigorous pruning and destruction of infected wood, avoiding overhead irrigation that promotes humidity, and applying protective copper-based fungicides. Maintaining proper air circulation by thinning out dense bushes is also critical to minimize the risk of infection.
