Golovinomyces ambrosiae is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for powdery mildew infections, primarily affecting species within the Asteraceae family. As an obligate parasite, it relies exclusively on living plant tissues, extracting nutrients through haustoria that penetrate the epidermal layers of the host plant.
Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is the most significant host for this fungus, acting as a primary reservoir in agricultural landscapes. While primarily associated with weeds, the pathogen can impact various cultivated plants, causing physiological stress and reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the affected host throughout the growing season.
The disease is easily identified by the appearance of a white, powdery fungal growth on leaves, stems, and petioles. This visible layer consists of mycelium and a massive number of conidia, which serve as asexual spores. These spores are easily detached and dispersed by air currents, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly across fields.
