Golovinomyces latisporus is a fungal pathogen responsible for powdery mildew, a common and destructive disease in many plant species. As an obligate biotroph, it thrives by colonizing the epidermal cells of the host, depriving the plant of essential nutrients and disrupting its physiological processes.
The host range of this fungus is primarily focused on members of the Asteraceae family. It is frequently observed affecting various ornamental plants and specific agricultural crops, including zinnias, dahlias, and sunflowers, often leading to reduced aesthetic appeal and significant biomass loss in infected plantings.
The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of white, mycelial patches on the leaf surface, which look like a dusting of flour. As the fungus matures, these patches can cover the entire leaf surface, stems, and flower buds. Eventually, the infected tissue becomes chlorotic, brittle, and may prematurely wither or drop.
