Golovinomyces orontii is a well-known fungal pathogen responsible for powdery mildew, one of the most prevalent diseases affecting a wide range of horticultural and field crops. It primarily attacks plants belonging to the Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae families, causing significant economic losses in commercial production.
As an obligate biotrophic fungus, it obtains nutrients exclusively from living plant tissues. The pathogen typically presents as a white to grayish-white powdery mycelium covering the surfaces of leaves, petioles, and occasionally stems. Its ability to produce massive amounts of conidia facilitates rapid secondary spread via air currents.
Initial infection manifests as small, localized patches of white spores. As the disease progresses, these patches merge, leading to chlorosis, leaf curl, and necrosis of the foliage. The reduction in photosynthetic area results in stunted growth, delayed plant maturity, and a marked decrease in fruit quality and yield.
