The fungus establishes a mutualistic relationship with the root systems of coniferous trees, primarily spruce (Picea). This biological process involves the exchange of water and essential mineral salts, provided by the fungal mycelium, for carbohydrates synthesized by the tree during photosynthesis, effectively boosting tree growth.
