The Gomphillaceae family consists of a diverse group of lichenized fungi. In professional agronomy, they are classified as epiphytes rather than plant pathogens, as they rely on the host plant primarily as a substrate for attachment rather than as a source of nutritional extraction.

The biological nature of these organisms is a mutualistic symbiosis between a fungus and algae. Unlike infectious agents that penetrate vascular tissues, Gomphillaceae remain on the surface, utilizing the outer bark or leaf surfaces to gain height and access better conditions for photosynthesis and nutrient uptake from dust and rain.

These organisms thrive in high-humidity environments, making them common in tropical regions and temperate old-growth orchards. They colonize mature trees that offer stable environmental conditions, especially where canopy shading and stagnant air allow for sustained moisture levels throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of colonization include the development of crustose or squamulose thalli on tree bark or foliage. These structures often manifest as distinct, patch-like growths that may exhibit various shades of green, gray, or brown, reflecting the health of the underlying lichen community rather than a decline in the tree's health.

While Gomphillaceae are generally harmless to the plant's metabolic processes, extensive colonization can provide micro-habitats for insects like scale insects or mites. Control measures are rarely required, but for aesthetic and horticultural hygiene, regular pruning to improve airflow and solar penetration is the most effective way to limit their development.
