Gomphillus is a genus of lichenized fungi that can develop on the bark of trees and shrubs, occasionally acting as a growth-inhibiting factor in agricultural environments. While not an aggressive pathogen, its presence on host plants can lead to a decline in tree vitality due to the colonization of surfaces and interference with gas exchange.
The causative agent belongs to the genus Gomphillus. As a lichenized fungus, it thrives on the moisture trapped in tree bark and leaves. Its biological cycle is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions; it propagates through spores which can settle and colonize surfaces that remain humid for extended periods, reducing the host's ability to undergo photosynthesis effectively.
Various crops can be affected, including fruit trees like apples, pears, and citrus, as well as several ornamental garden plants. Plants that are already stressed due to poor pruning, excessive shade, or high humidity levels are at a significantly higher risk of colonization by this fungus compared to healthy, well-managed crops.

These structures often manifest as a creamy, white, or pale yellow crust on the bark.
