Gomphonema is a genus of diatomaceous algae that, while commonly found in natural water bodies, can become a significant agricultural issue in controlled environment agriculture, particularly in hydroponics and aquaculture. These organisms form stalked colonies that attach to surfaces, interfering with technical equipment and plant root systems.

These diatoms act as an abiotic-biotic stressor. They do not infect the plant tissue as a fungus would, but rather colonize the surfaces of irrigation pipes, drip emitters, and the exterior of the plant roots. By forming dense biofilms, they impede nutrient uptake and create an anaerobic environment that can lead to root rot and other secondary physiological disorders.

The primary symptoms of a Gomphonema outbreak include a distinct brown or golden-brown slimy film on any surface exposed to nutrient-rich water. If left unmanaged, the colonization leads to the blockage of irrigation lines, reduced oxygen diffusion to the roots, and a noticeable decline in the overall growth rate of the affected crops.

Development conditions for this organism are primarily driven by excessive silica levels, high phosphate concentrations, and consistent light exposure. Unlike pathogenic fungi, these diatoms thrive in environments where nutrient solutions are stagnant, as this allows the cells to settle and begin the formation of their sticky, mucilaginous attachment stalks.

Prevention and management strategies focus on sanitation and system design.

  • Implementation of UV sterilization for nutrient solutions.
  • Complete light-proofing of reservoirs and irrigation lines.
  • Regular mechanical cleaning of pumps, filters, and piping.
  • Monitoring and balancing nutrient ratios, especially silica and phosphorus.
Utilizing biological controls or hydrogen peroxide treatments can also mitigate established colonies without damaging the primary crop.
