While it does not directly infect plant tissues, it acts as a bio-contaminant that colonizes surfaces, piping, and root zones, negatively impacting the efficiency of controlled environment agriculture.
The cultures most susceptible to this phenomenon include leafy greens, herbs, and strawberries grown in nutrient film technique (NFT) or deep water culture systems. By forming thick biofilms on roots and tubing, these algae restrict root respiration and disrupt the balanced nutrient uptake required for healthy plant development.
Key symptoms include the appearance of golden-brown or rust-colored slimy deposits on exposed surfaces of the hydroponic system and the root mass itself. As the colony grows, the roots may appear muddy, and the plants may exhibit signs of nutrient deficiency or water stress even when the water supply is chemically optimal.
The proliferation of Gomphonema parvum is strictly correlated with environmental factors such as light penetration into nutrient tanks and elevated levels of dissolved silicates.
