Gomphonemataceae is a family of diatomaceous algae characterized by their unique, silica-based cell walls and stalked attachment structures. While they do not directly infect plant tissues like fungal pathogens, their presence in agricultural water systems is a significant management issue that can indirectly impact crop health by disrupting nutrient delivery.

These organisms primarily affect irrigation infrastructure, including drip lines, emitters, and filtration systems in greenhouse operations and hydroponic setups. When allowed to proliferate, Gomphonemataceae colonies form dense, brownish biofilms on the inner surfaces of pipes and pumps, which significantly restricts water flow and causes nutrient delivery imbalances.

The primary symptom of infestation is the observation of slippery, brownish or ochre-colored deposits inside irrigation piping and on filter screens. In severe cases, the blockage leads to clogged emitters, resulting in uneven water distribution across the field or greenhouse, which can eventually lead to localized plant wilting and nutrient deficiency stress.

Development and spread are primarily driven by nutrient-rich water, specifically high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen, combined with exposure to light. Since these are photosynthetic organisms, they thrive in irrigation components that are not light-proof, rapidly colonizing any surface exposed to the sun or supplemental greenhouse lighting.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing the light exposure necessary for photosynthesis and maintaining high standards of water sanitation. Key prevention measures include:

  • Installing opaque piping to prevent light penetration.
  • Regular acid washing to dissolve mineral and algae buildup.
  • Implementation of UV-C sterilization modules in the irrigation cycle.
  • Systematic cleaning of filters and emitters during the inter-crop period.
By maintaining a sterile and light-protected delivery environment, growers can effectively mitigate the risks associated with these diatoms.
