Description

The Gonapodyaceae family consists of aquatic fungi belonging to the order Monoblepharidales. While these organisms typically function as decomposers in aquatic habitats, their presence in hydroponic systems, waterlogged soils, or high-humidity greenhouse environments can pose a threat to plant health by attacking root tissues.

These fungi are primarily saprotrophic, yet they exhibit facultative parasitic behavior when plant roots are already weakened by stress factors. The pathogen spreads via motile zoospores, which thrive in stagnant or poorly aerated water, facilitating the colonization of root hairs and subsequent decay.

The crops most vulnerable to these fungi include greenhouse vegetable seedlings, hydroponically grown lettuce, and various ornamental water plants. Vulnerability is significantly increased in systems with high concentrations of organic debris and lack of proper water filtration or oxygenation.

Symptoms include the browning and necrosis of the root system, lack of root hair development, and stunted growth of the plant's aerial parts. Affected plants often exhibit wilting symptoms that resemble nutritional deficiency or lack of water, despite high moisture levels in the substrate.

Effective management requires maintaining water hygiene through ultraviolet sterilization, ozone treatment, or hydrogen peroxide applications in recirculating systems. Preventive measures include ensuring good aeration in hydroponics, periodic flushing of substrates to remove decaying organic matter, and the application of preventative bio-fungicides to bolster root health.
