Gonatobotrys blight

Gonatobotrys

Description

Gonatobotrys blight is a fungal plant disease caused by the imperfect fungus Gonatobotrys (with Gonatobotrys simplex being the most studied species). This pathogen is frequently documented as a mycoparasite, but it can also infect the tissues of cultivated plants, causing necrotic processes. The disease is classified as a type of mold rot that primarily affects weakened or damaged parts of vegetative organs.

The main crops susceptible to Gonatobotrys infection are vegetable plants grown under protected conditions. The fungus poses a significant threat to tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers in greenhouse environments, where high planting density and specific microclimatic conditions facilitate the rapid spread of spores. The pathogen can also persist on crop residues, maintaining an infection reservoir in the soil and greenhouse structures.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as a characteristic white or grayish-white coating on the surface of leaves, stems, and fruits. The mycelium of the pathogen forms compact tufts composed of conidiophores. As the disease progresses, the tissues beneath the fungal coating darken, soften, and begin to decay, leading to premature wilting and death of the affected plant parts.

The conditions for the development of the fungus are directly linked to air humidity and temperature levels. An optimal environment for spore germination includes relative humidity above 85-90% and temperatures ranging between +20°C and +25°C. Poor air circulation in greenhouses, lack of regular ventilation, and the presence of water droplets on plant surfaces create ideal conditions for the rapid spread of fungal spores.

  • Regular greenhouse ventilation to reduce overall humidity levels.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of all infected crop residues.
  • Maintaining optimal planting density to ensure adequate air circulation.
  • Sanitization and disinfection of greenhouse structures and soil after the growing season.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides upon the detection of initial infection clusters.

The economic damage caused by Gonatobotrys blight includes a sharp decline in the market quality of fruits and a significant reduction in overall yield. Under severe infestation, a large portion of the crop may be lost, as the fungus quickly colonizes tissues, rendering them unsuitable for storage or sale. Sound agricultural practices and preventative measures are essential factors in suppressing this fungal disease.
