The disease caused by Gonatobotrys complex is primarily classified as a mycoparasitic interaction. Unlike typical pathogens that attack plant tissue directly, this fungus acts as a secondary colonizer, feeding on the mycelium of other fungal pathogens such as Alternaria or Botrytis species, which are already present on the host plant.
This biological complex primarily affects various vegetable crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, especially in humid environments like greenhouses. While it is rarely the primary cause of plant death, it complicates the disease profile of the host and can exacerbate the damage caused by primary fungal infections.
Symptoms appear as a distinct white or light-gray, somewhat powdery, or downy growth on top of existing necrotic leaf spots or stems. Under microscopic observation, the characteristic structure of the fungus becomes evident, showing swollen, bulbous cells on the conidiophores where spores are produced in clusters.
The development and spread of Gonatobotrys complex are highly dependent on high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are easily dispersed by air currents, splashing water during irrigation, and contact with contaminated gardening tools, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly throughout a crop canopy.

- Applying appropriate fungicides to control primary fungal infections, thereby removing the substrate for the mycoparasite.

- Removing severely infected plant debris to reduce the overall inoculum load in the growing area.
