Gonatobotrys simplex is a fungal pathogen known primarily as a mycoparasite, meaning it feeds on other fungi that infect various plant species. While it is frequently found colonizing the mycelium of other pathogens, such as Botrytis cinerea, it can under high-humidity conditions negatively impact the host plant’s health, complicating the management of greenhouse crops.
This disease is most prevalent in protected environments such as greenhouses, where it targets vegetable crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and ornamental plants. The organism thrives where there is a pre-existing fungal infestation, which acts as a nutrient base for the Gonatobotrys colony, allowing it to rapidly spread across the stems and leaves.
The primary symptom is the emergence of a fluffy, white to light gray growth on the surface of infected plant tissues. Unlike strictly destructive pathogens, the initial signs of Gonatobotrys simplex often mimic or obscure the underlying infection. However, its presence can be confirmed by observing the distinctive arrangement of its conidiophores under a microscope, which form dense, globular structures.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of this fungus. High relative humidity, often exceeding 85%, coupled with poor ventilation and moderate temperatures, creates an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. Furthermore, dense plant spacing can trap moisture, providing perfect conditions for the disease to proliferate throughout the crop canopy.
Management and prevention strategies focus on both controlling the primary infection and regulating the greenhouse climate:
- Implement proper ventilation to reduce humidity levels below 70%.
- Maintain good sanitary practices by removing dead plant matter and infected debris.
- Use fungicides effective against both Botrytis and associated secondary fungi.
- Ensure adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow and reduce moisture accumulation.
