Gonatophragmium is a fungal genus responsible for causing leaf spot diseases in various plant species. As a phytopathogen, it primarily attacks the foliage, causing cellular damage that interferes with photosynthesis and general plant metabolism, ultimately affecting plant vigor and potential yield.

The host range of this pathogen includes several agricultural and ornamental crops, with specific species often associated with mulberry trees. The infection typically starts on the leaves, where the fungus penetrates the epidermal layers to establish colonization and begin its reproductive cycle.

The primary symptom is the appearance of distinct spots on the leaf blades. These lesions are usually characterized by necrotic centers that may turn brown or greyish as the fungus matures. Under magnification, one can observe the characteristic conidiophores protruding through the stomata, which give the spots a fuzzy or dusty texture when sporulation is active.

Environmental conditions are the main drivers of disease outbreaks. Prolonged periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures are required for the germination of spores and the secondary spread of the disease. Inadequate ventilation within fields or plantations significantly increases the risk of rapid infection progression across the canopy.

Economic damage arises from reduced leaf area, which slows down plant development and weakens the plant's ability to store energy for subsequent growth stages. Effective disease management strategies include:

  • rigorous sanitation, including the removal and destruction of fallen infected leaves;
  • pruning to ensure adequate air circulation and sunlight penetration;
  • application of appropriate fungicides during high-risk weather windows;
  • monitoring for early signs of disease to prevent widespread outbreaks.
