Description

Gongronella is a genus of soil-borne fungi belonging to the Zygomycota phylum. While these fungi primarily function as saprotrophs by decomposing organic matter, they are recognized in agronomy as opportunistic pathogens that can induce root and stem decay in various cultivated plants under stress conditions.

The primary causative agent is Gongronella butleri. This fungus exists as part of the soil microflora and relies on mycelial structures or spores to persist in the field. When environmental factors are favorable for the fungus but detrimental to the plant, the pathogen initiates an infection in the rhizosphere.

Agricultural crops, particularly seedlings and young plants, are the most susceptible to Gongronella. It frequently attacks the root tissues, preventing the plant from absorbing water and essential nutrients, which leads to stunted development or the complete collapse of the plant population in affected field patches.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as necrotic lesions on roots, water-soaked tissue decay, and wilting of the leaves. In humid conditions, a visible mycelial mat may develop on the roots or the soil surface near the stem base, often appearing whitish or grayish in color.

The development of the disease is highly influenced by environmental parameters:

  • Excessive soil moisture and poor drainage.
  • Low soil temperatures during the planting season.
  • High concentrations of organic debris left on the field surface.
  • Root stress caused by pests or compaction.

To control Gongronella, a multi-faceted approach is required. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including seed treatments, proper field sanitation to reduce inoculum load, and the optimization of soil drainage, are critical. Maintaining optimal plant vigor through balanced fertilization helps plants better resist fungal invasions, ensuring a more stable harvest.
