In agronomy, this microorganism is considered an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing root rot and seed decay in various agricultural crops under specific conditions. As a typical soil inhabitant, it exhibits high saprotrophic activity but can transition to a parasitic lifestyle when the host plant's defenses are compromised.

This fungus affects a wide range of plants, including cereals, legumes, vegetables, and ornamental species. Seedlings and seeds residing in the soil are particularly vulnerable. The infection often presents in patches and can spread to the root systems of perennial plants, leading to stunted growth, reduced yields, and premature wilting of the vegetative biomass.

Symptoms of infection include the development of soft rot on underground organs, discoloration of the root system (darkening or softening of tissues), and general growth retardation. In high-humidity conditions, a characteristic mycelial growth typical of Mucorales fungi may appear on the soil surface or affected plant tissues, which complicates visual diagnosis without proper laboratory analysis.

The development of the pathogen is directly dependent on environmental factors. The most favorable conditions for the spread of this fungus include high soil moisture, moderate to high temperatures, and excessive levels of organic debris that has not undergone complete mineralization. Poor field drainage and overly dense sowing create a microclimate that promotes rapid infection spread in the rhizosphere.

The economic impact of Gongronella butleri is primarily linked to reduced seed germination and damage to primary root systems. Effective protection strategies involve crop rotation, improving soil aeration and drainage, the use of high-quality treated seeds, and the application of biological fungicides that suppress the activity of soil-borne pathogenic microflora.
