Gonyaulacales are an order of dinoflagellates primarily recognized for their role in marine ecosystems. In an agricultural context, they represent a significant challenge for water management systems, as they are capable of producing harmful algal blooms (HABs) that can contaminate water sources intended for irrigation and aquaculture.
The causative agents are unicellular organisms that release potent neurotoxins. From an agronomic standpoint, the primary danger is the indirect effect of these toxins on plant health and livestock safety when contaminated water is utilized. The presence of these organisms often signals ecological instability within a watershed.
Crops in sensitive production systems, such as hydroponics or specialized vegetable farming, are at risk if the irrigation source is compromised by a bloom.
