Grapevine leafroll disease

Grapevine leafroll-associated

Description

Grapevine leafroll disease (Grapevine leafroll-associated) is a major viral complex caused primarily by viruses of the Closteroviridae family. It is one of the most economically significant viral diseases affecting viticulture globally, as it severely disrupts the vine's vascular system.

The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Since the virus is systemic, it moves through the entire vascular network of the vine, making the plant a permanent source of infection for neighboring healthy vines throughout its lifespan.

Diagnostic symptoms typically manifest in late summer. The characteristic sign is the downward curling of leaves. In red grape varieties, the leaf tissue between the veins turns red or purple while the veins remain green. In white varieties, leaves show distinct yellowing and rolling, which can often be mistaken for nutrient deficiencies.

The spread of the virus occurs primarily through two mechanisms: the use of infected propagation material (cuttings and rootstocks) and transmission by insect vectors. Mealybugs and scale insects are the main carriers, as they acquire the virus while feeding on phloem sap and transmit it to healthy plants.

  • Reduced berry sugar accumulation and anthocyanin content.
  • Delayed harvest maturity by several weeks.
  • Decreased crop yield and inconsistent fruit ripening.
  • Weakened root development and reduced overall winter hardiness.
  • Increased vine mortality over time.

Management of leafroll disease is entirely preventative because there is no known chemical cure. Growers must prioritize planting certified virus-free nursery stock, implementing strict vector control programs to manage mealybug populations, and practicing immediate roguing of infected vines to stop the disease from spreading throughout the vineyard.
