Description
Dutch elm disease, associated with fungi from the Graphiaceae family and the genus Ophiostoma, is a devastating vascular disease affecting elm trees globally. The pathogen invades the tree's xylem, causing a systemic infection that disrupts water transport, eventually leading to severe wilt and tree mortality.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are species of the genus Ulmus. Once infected, the disease can spread rapidly through a stand of trees, moving from one tree to another through interconnected root systems (root grafting) or through the intervention of insect vectors that move spores across the landscape.
Key symptoms include flagging, which is the yellowing and wilting of leaves on individual branches, typically becoming noticeable in early summer. If the bark is peeled back, dark brown or black streaks can be seen in the sapwood, representing the tree's defense response against the encroaching fungal infection which clogs the xylem vessels.
The disease is heavily dependent on the biology of elm bark beetles, which serve as the primary vector. The fungi thrive in moist, warm conditions, which also favor beetle activity. As the beetles burrow into the bark to feed, they introduce the fungal spores directly into the vascular tissue of the host, initiating a rapid progression of the disease.
Management of the disease is notoriously difficult and requires a combination of strategies. Prevention is the most effective approach, consisting of sanitation (removing and destroying diseased wood), systemic fungicide injections for high-value specimen trees, and the planting of resistant or tolerant elm cultivars to ensure the long-term survival of elm populations in the landscape.
