Description
The disease is caused by the microscopic fungal pathogen Graphium basitruncatum. This fungus is known for its distinct reproductive structures, characterized by stalked conidiophores that facilitate its spread. It is an opportunistic pathogen that targets the vascular and foliar tissues of woody perennials.
The primary host for this pathogen is the walnut tree (Juglans regia). The infection can manifest across all parts of the canopy, including leaves, tender shoots, and developing nuts. Because it thrives on nutrients found in the host plant tissues, the fungus causes systemic stress to the tree, often beginning in the lower canopy where ventilation is poorer.
Symptoms typically start as small, irregular necrotic spots on the foliage, which expand and merge over time. As the tissue dies, it turns dark brown or black, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In humid conditions, a visible layer of gray mycelial growth develops on the underside of the leaves. Severe infections lead to premature defoliation and tip dieback.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of this disease. Prolonged periods of rainfall, high relative humidity, and warm temperatures are highly conducive to the germination and spread of fungal spores.

The economic impact of this infection is significant, as it leads to reduced nut yield and quality. By disrupting the tree’s photosynthetic capacity and causing premature leaf drop, the fungus weakens the overall vigor of the walnut tree. Over time, persistent outbreaks can cause branch dieback and significantly reduce the lifespan of the orchard.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. This includes strictly sanitizing the orchard by removing and burning all infected plant debris during the dormant season. Preventive fungicide applications are most effective when applied during the early leaf-out phase. Ensuring proper tree spacing and thinning the canopy helps minimize humidity, thereby reducing the chances of infection.
