The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Graphium fimbriasporum, an anamorphic pathogen that primarily targets the vascular system of trees. By colonizing the xylem, the fungus obstructs water transport, causing physiological stress, wilting, and often leading to the eventual death of the affected plant host.

Various deciduous tree species are susceptible to this pathogen. The infection is frequently facilitated by entry points in the bark, such as wounds or feeding galleries created by bark beetles, which act as primary vectors for spreading the fungal spores to healthy host plants.

The disease symptoms typically begin with canopy wilting and leaf discoloration, progressing from green to yellow or brown.
