Graphium penicillioides is a fungal pathogen classified within the group of imperfect fungi. It is primarily known for causing sapstain and discoloration in timber, which significantly impacts the aesthetic and structural quality of wood products harvested from affected forests.

This fungus typically infects various broad-leaved tree species. It acts as a secondary invader, colonizing wood that has been weakened by drought, physiological stress, or structural damage. Its transmission is most commonly facilitated by bark beetles and other wood-boring insects, which carry fungal spores on their bodies and inoculate them into the host tree.

The primary clinical symptom of the infection is the development of dark, pigmented streaks or deep staining within the sapwood. As the infection progresses, the fungal hyphae occupy the vascular tissue, leading to a disruption in water transport and, in some cases, contributing to the death of branches or the entire tree.
