Graphostromataceae is a family of ascomycete fungi known to affect various woody plants. These pathogens act as causal agents for specific bark and stem diseases, which disrupt the vascular integrity of the host plant and can lead to significant branch dieback.
The primary hosts for these fungi are deciduous trees found in diverse forest ecosystems. The fungus typically invades the host through mechanical wounds, pruning cuts, or fissures in the bark. Once inside, the mycelium spreads within the cambial tissue, interfering with the tree's ability to transport nutrients and water effectively.
Symptoms of the infection include the formation of distinct stromata that erupt through the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the surrounding bark tissue becomes discolored and necrotic. Eventually, affected branches show signs of wilting, premature leaf loss, and bark cracking, which are clear indicators of systemic stress within the woody tissue.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development and spread of Graphostromataceae. High humidity levels, prolonged moisture, and mild temperatures promote the germination of spores, which are then disseminated by wind, rain splashes, or wood-boring insects.
