Greeneria, caused by the fungus Greeneria uvicola, is a significant plant disease primarily affecting grapevines. It is widely recognized in viticulture for causing a condition often referred to as bitter rot, which can devastate vineyard productivity if left unmanaged during the growing season.
The pathogen is a fungus that thrives in warm, humid climates, making vineyards with poor air circulation particularly susceptible to infection. The disease affects all aerial parts of the grapevine, including shoots, leaves, and crucially, the developing berries, which become highly vulnerable as they transition into the ripening phase.
Primary symptoms include the development of necrotic lesions on the leaves and shoots. On berries, the infection manifests as small, depressed, brown or black spots that rapidly expand, leading to the total decay of the fruit. As the disease progresses, small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia form on the surface of the lesions, serving as the source for secondary spore dispersal.
The economic impact of Greeneria is substantial due to direct fruit loss and the impairment of overall vine health. By damaging the foliage and shoots, the fungus reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which hinders the accumulation of sugars and weakens the vine's ability to withstand winter conditions. The persistence of the pathogen in plant debris makes it a recurring threat in orchards and vineyards.
Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Cultural practices, such as removing mummified berries and pruning infected canes, are essential to reduce the primary inoculum load. Chemical protection involves the timely application of fungicides during periods of high humidity. Maintaining open canopy structures through proper training and leaf removal is also vital to improve airflow and minimize the conditions that favor fungal development.
