Gremmeniella canker, also known as Scleroderris canker, is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Gremmeniella abietina. This fungus primarily affects coniferous tree species, causing severe damage to branches and stems, which often leads to the death of young trees and saplings.
The disease is most commonly observed on various species of pine, including Scots pine, although it can also affect spruce, fir, and larch. It poses a significant threat to young plantations and forest nurseries where high planting density facilitates the rapid transmission of the pathogen.
Key symptoms include the discoloration of needles, which turn yellow or brown at the base of the shoots, eventually spreading throughout the entire branch. As the infection progresses, necrotic lesions or cankers form on the bark. These cankers are often accompanied by resin flow and result in dieback of the affected parts.
The development and spread of the fungus are strongly influenced by environmental conditions. Cool, moist weather creates an ideal environment for spore production and germination. The disease spreads primarily through wind-borne and rain-splashed spores, especially in dense stands where air circulation is restricted.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices, such as maintaining proper planting distance and regular removal of infected branches or trees, are critical. In high-risk areas, the application of fungicides may be necessary during the spring infection period to protect healthy plants.
